1 February 1993, Romania signs the European Agreement, which institutes an association between Romania, on one hand, and the European Communities and its member states, on the other.
1993- Copenhagen, the member states decided that the associated states from Central and Eastern Europe can became member states of the European Union in the moment of the fulfillment of the necessary economic and political criteria.
22 June 1995, submission, by Romania, of the accession request to the European Union, after a few monthsafter the entering into force of the European Agreement (1 February 1995).
December 1999, the European Council of Helsinki took the decision to start the negotiation for accession with Romania
February 2000, the official launch of the negotiation process for the accession of Romania to the EU.
the European Councils of Copenhagen (December 2002), of Thessaloniki (June 2003), Bruxelles (December 2003 and June 2004) reconfirm the support of the EU member states towards the conclusion of the negotiations in 2004, the signing of the Accession Treaty as soon as possible in 2005 and the effective accession in January 2007.
December 2004, the conclusion of the negotiation for accessionand the confirmation of the accession calendar during the European Council of Bruxelles.
3 April 2005, Romania receives the assent of the European Parliament
25 April 2005, at Luxemburg- the signing of the Accession Treaty
26 September 2006, the European Commission’s positive Report, which underlined positive effects, but also the aspects upon which Romania must concentrate for the following period.
01 January 2007, Romania joined the European Union
28 June 2007 – Romania presented the Declaration of Readiness in three fields: protection of personal data, police cooperation and visas.
2 June 2008 – the second Declaration of Readiness has been sent, including all the evaluation fields.
24-25 January 2008 – at the Justice and Home Affairs Council reunion, Romania and Bulgaria have signed The Romanian-Bulgarian common declaration regarding the accession to the Schengen area in 2011.
10 November 2008 – Romania has officially sent the answers to the Schengen Questionnaire to the Council’s General Secretariat.
In 2009 and 2010, Schengen evaluation visits have been organised in order to verify on site the implementation of the Schengen acquis:
- Police cooperation – 23-29 March 2009;
- Protection of personal data – 29 April – 1 May 2009;
- Visas – 2-11 June 2009;
- Sea borders – 3-7 September 2009;
- Air borders – 15-18 November 2009;
- Land borders – 26 March-1 April 2010;
- Re-evaluation of air and land borders – 15-17 November 2010;
- Schengen Information System/SIRENE – 6-10 December 2010;
All Schengen evaluation reports, related to the completed missions, have been approved in the Schengen Evaluation working group in Brussels, the main conclusion of the 8 evaluation reports stating that Romania has reached an advanced progress with regard to the Schengen acquis implementation and that it is prepared to access the Schengen area.
9 June 2011 – at the Justice and Home Affairs Council reunion, the Council’s Conclusions concerning the completion of the evaluation process of Romania and Bulgaria for the complete application of the Schengen acquis provisions were approved, which represented an official recognition, on behalf of all Member States, of the completion of the accession conditions.
